A Portable Water Purification System

The average American taking a five-minute shower uses more water than the average person in a developing country uses for an entire day. 3.4 million people die each year from a water related disease caused by the lack of access to clean drinking water and sanitation. This occurs in developing countries but it is also a problem in locations that a natural disaster may have occurred like Haiti, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. A major reason deaths are caused is that contaminated water that is accessible for frequent use. Our mission is to develop a versatile, lightweight solar powered water purification system that will be able to provide clean drinking water to people. Our project goal is to have our working prototype of the solar powered water purification system be able to purify water at a rate of about two gallons per minute. It will also be lightweight and compact in order to be able to fit inside the space of a backpack. The system will be simple and easy to use because a person must be able to assemble the system within a 30 minute or less time period from taking the system out of the backpack or casing. The system itself will be able to compete with existing water purification systems because we will do our best to make the price of the system as affordable as we can but deliver the optimal output of purified water to help those in need.

Solely Pure will help those in immediate recovery in post-disaster relief situations as well as those who just don’t have reliable access to clean drinking water. While focusing on those who are struck by natural disaster is very important, there is also a large number of people - 780 million - who either do not have access to reliable, clean water or access to power. In fact, 1.2 billion people around the world do not have access to electricity. Solely Pure can alleviate the needs of any of these people in any of these unfortunate circumstances.
